CannaSwissCup – Established 1998

The idea of organizing a cup for the best Swiss cannabis arose at a meeting of the Swiss Hemp Coordination in 1998. In the same year, the CannaSwissCup Association was founded, and the first cup was immediately organized.

The idea was to let consumers vote on which variety they liked best.

At that time, it was still with THC cannabis, as the laws in Switzerland still allowed it. However, the varieties were not allowed to be consumed, but could only be judged by appearance and scent. ;-)

Six producers participated with their outdoor varieties. The submitted varieties were glued into mini grips on a "jury card" and sold through Swiss hemp shops.

The award ceremony took place at the first Swiss Hemp Days in spring 1999 in the Stufenbau in Ittigen.

The whole thing was a wild party with music, stalls, food, and of course lots of smoke... The varieties were judged by the jury members by appearance and taste.

The event was a great success and was continued in 2000, this time with already eight participating varieties. Again, the prizes were awarded at the Swiss Hemp Days, this time as part of a small hemp fair with exhibitors from home and abroad.

The Swiss Hemp Days then became the first CannaTrade Hemp Fair in 2001 on the grounds of the BEA Expo in Bern. The success was enormous, and CannaTrade is still around today, making it the oldest existing hemp fair in the world.

The Cup also continued for several years, at peak times with 12 outdoor varieties. However, with increasing repression in 2005, the CannaSwissCup Association unfortunately had to cease its activities, and the CannaSwissCup went into a Sleeping Beauty sleep.

Until innovative growers brought the first legal CBD cannabis flowers onto the market as a tobacco substitute product in 2016, and Switzerland began to grow cannabis again.

It immediately became clear that with this huge offer, a CannaSwissCup was needed again. The responses to inquiries from producers for a re-launch of the Cup were overwhelming, and so it is back immediately:
